Oui, the Media

Last week was all about putting the “me” in “media” as they say (though sometimes they say “I”).

I’ll keep this brief: Besides my usual appearances in the Bohemian, Pacific Sun, and on The Drive 95.5 FM , I also appeared on San Francisco public radio juggernaut KQED.

The occasion was one of their Perspective monologues, in which Bay Area people tell ya what it’s all about. Mine was all about “sublime mediocrity,” an audio redux of a recent column tracing the travails and tribulations of being an artist.

Listen to it here:

The jury is out on whether unpacking my psychic baggage in front of a couple hundred thousand listeners was wise for ye olde career but at least now it’s light enough to be a carry-on when I fly the coup because the Trumpstapo are rounding up journos.

Come Wednesday, I scored a mention in the Mark Riley’s MediaMorph newsletter from across the pond in Bristol, England, where Riley is founder of Mathison AI. The company describes itself as “your AI R&D Lab, helping organisations navigate the AI landscape through education, ideation, and experimentation.” Riley was forwarded a recent Pacific Sun column about AI and journalism—Won’t Get Fooled Again: Nu Journalism in the Age of AI. Here’s his intro to the piece:

As AI-generated content is predicted to dominate online media by 2025, the need for a human touch in journalism becomes increasingly vital. The rise of “Nu Journalism” highlights personal experience and authenticity, ensuring that storytelling remains meaningful and relevant amidst the growing prevalence of machine-generated narratives.

I stand by this. Read it here.

One response to “Oui, the Media”

  1. It reminds me of when the camera first came on the scene but instead of replacing artists, artists evolved. While some artists used the new technology, other artists developed new forms of expression using traditional materials.
