Writing & Blogging

Writing

The old route manager for us Petaluma Argus-Courier paperboys, circa 1984, had a habit of slipping inspirational messages into our bundles. Frequently, the mimeographed notes were lists of famous former paperboys, none of whom I can recall, but all apparently developed estimable “grit” while throwing printed-matter at people’s houses. In the intervening decade, I matured from paperboy to newspaperman and eventually became the arts editor of the very paper I delivered as a pre-teen. Throughout and since, I’ve kept the grit, added professionalism and continue to enjoy the inspiration that comes with my work. If you’re an editor seeking to complement your stable, or managing a project in need of top-drawer copy, I invite you to peruse the clips archived at this site.

I’ve written for a number of publications, national and regional, online and slicks. My specialty beats include lifestyle, arts and entertainment, wine*, film, popular culture, celebrity interviews, cultural theory and esoterica. Affiliations include the San Francisco Chronicle, L.A. Downtown News, Gayot.com, Bohemian, Script Magazine, Vineyard & Winery Management Magazine, Argus-Courier, Sonoma Valley Sun and FineLife Sonoma Magazine (for which I was editor), Patterson’s Tasting Panel Magazine and the Sonoma Index-Tribune for which I pen a weekly column.

If you seek new, original editorial content for print or online, or are interested in reprinting or re-purposing existing content from my extensive archive, let’s connect.

Likewise, if your editorial needs also include photography, might I suggest DHowell Media Group alumnus Ryan “Flash” Lely, with whom I’ve worked on hundreds of published features, videos and at least one art installation.

Blogging

Blogging is the cornerstone of social media marketing. Effective blogging creates lasting affinities between companies and consumers in an environment the consumer has actively engaged. They are there to invest mindshare into your brand – are you there to meet them? Marketing departments often lack the time or budget to embrace blogging. The solution is to host a guest blogger.

A guest blogger is not a shill, not a pseudonymous character, nor a ghostwriter. A guest blogger is a professional writer invited to pontificate upon, share and illuminate your brand experience from their perspective, on your site. The process is transparent and open with the explicit goal of cultivating a readership, creating dialogue and encouraging readers to become consumers.

I understand that “content is marketing.” As a guest blogger, I dovetail my unique observations, insights and voice to match the culture of my hosts. I can blog as often as you like (daily, weekly, etc.) and for specific durations as an enhancement to campaigns and promotions. Blogs can be written editorial, video or audio podcasts, or combination of all of the above and maintained off-campus.

To quote the Six Million Dollar Man, “We have the technology.” Let’s make your blog bionic, by which I mean, “Better, faster, stronger.” Connect with me.
