Monty Python’s John Cleese on Creativity

April 8, 2012 • On Writing

Kudos to Gizmodo AU’s Logan Booker for unearthing and re-posting this archival gem featuring Monty Python’s John Cleese sharing his insights on creativity. Per Booker’s post:

I’m having trouble dating this video (though the consensus is 1991), but I can tell you it’s from Video Arts, a UK e-learning company founded in 1972 by John Cleese and other “television professionals”. In this particular clip, Cleese delivers a lecture on creativity, infused with his own brand of humour.

“Creativity is not a talent. It is a way of operating,” chides Cleese in his inimitable schoolmaster style. It’s a bit like watching a creativity-themed redux of his sex-ed sketch in the Meaning of Life, which is to say brilliant – all 36  minutes of it.

Here’s another, more recent, video distributed by Cleese’s company, VideoArtsGroup.
